SUMMARY
After 18 Rounds of football the finals kicked off with the much anticipated Clarence-Launceston rematch, a game which a month before belonged to the Blues. At Devonport Oval at Night Devonport were at home to their Southern Magpies rivals Glenorchy.
The Roos/Blues game was always going to be the match that everyone was going to keep their eye on, Clarence has built themselves a fortress at Bellerive Oval since the return of the TSL, and lucky for them that is where the Grand Final will be played should they be there.
Clarence was back to full strength, with a number of stars returning to the team that was convincingly beaten by the Blues back in round 15. Launceston would come into this game a bit nervous as they have not yet won a State League final, and it showed in the first half as Clarence dominated the first half and if it was not for some terribly inaccurate kicking for goal, the game would have been well and truly over at the long break.
The Roos had a total of 16 shoring shots to just six to the Blues, but they only managed to lead by 33 points going into the long break. A different side had come back out to play Clarence within the first 10 minutes Launceston had cut the lead back to 3 points.
Launceston showed for the first time this game it could match the Roos, booting five quick goals. But stung into action, Clarence responded as a hot premiership favourite should, ramming on six of the final seven goals to coast to a 32-point win – the Roos 23rd straight win at home.
Launceston’s Hudson Medallist Brian Finch was held to two goals by Gregg Sharman, and Clarence tagger Clint Riley did a similar job nullifying Blues captain and key onballer Scott Stephens.
In Devonport, Glenorchy, playing in its green clash jumper, never looked itself as it was held goalless in the opening quarter while Devonport booted four goals straight to 0.4. The third quarter was just as dominant as Devonport kicked five goals to one on the way to a big 50-point win. While Ben Reynolds was held goalless, big Rhys Colbeck kicked three and Rhys Mott, Brad Symmons and Chris McDonald threaded two apiece.
Devonport last season managed to eliminate the Blues the last time they have faced off in the finals, an inaccurate Launceston were never in the hunt against them. Both sides had a terrible run towards the finals, and it would have been likely that some would have thought a draw was on hands.
Both sides are sitting on 1 win apiece this season, the Magpies losing in their last clash, when they last met Launceston had secured second-spot on the ladder beating Devonport at Aurora Stadium. Devonport was a real test for the Blues, and the Blues were forced to come from a three-quarter time 13-point deficit.
The Blues kicked the first five goals of the last term, but then had to withstand another courageous Devonport comeback, as the visitors kicked the last two goals of the game but fell short by four-points.
Launceston full-forward Brian Finch continued on his march towards the Peter Hudson Medal as the TSL’s leading goal-kicker with four goals, including two in the final quarter, while Scott Stephens had 35 touches and Andrea Miar dominated the ruck. Marking target Ben Reynolds was the Magpies best at centre half-forward as well as booting three goals.
It was the Blues 10th straight win, and followed on from inflicting Clarence’s first & only loss of the season the previous round. Launceston are going to need to start better then they did last week, there were many skill errors by the Blues and it was lucky the Roos were unable to score goals or it could have been very ugly. Andrea Miar looked like he was already out of the game as he was struggling to move around the ground as he was so tired.
His skills are improving but this season he was out with an injury so his fitness going in was not the best, Scott Stephens was held pretty easily again last week, there were not many positives out of the first final for the Blues. Devonport are still without Brad McDonald this week, but they have other players to cover him.
Glenorchy's Daniel Joseph managed to hold Trent McCrossen pretty easily last week, so their leading ball winner this season was not his usual best. But the Northern Magpies still managed to walk away with a win and sent Glenorchy to play the Elimination Final on Sunday at Bellerive Oval.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Michael Sinclair (Launceston) - Brought the Blues back to life against Clarence last weekend kicked 3 goals, did a lot of the hard work in the Third Quarter, but the Blues couldn't go on with it.
Rhys Colbeck (Devonport) – The reliable forward for the Magpies managed to boot 3 goals last week in the Devonport victory over Glenorchy, he and Reynolds are going to be needed for the Magpies to get over the line.
QUESTION MARKS
Launceston managed to play 1 good quarter last weekend against Clarence and if the Roos had have kicked more accurate the game would have been a major blow out, since their return to the TSL the Blues haven't been that side people were expecting them to be, and haven't won a TSL final, are they going to start to show the Blues of old? Or are we destined to see more of what we did last weekend?
Devonport have the golden chance of adding to the misery of Launceston's fans by winning this final, this could be their chance to pop up as a possible contender, a win here could set up a showdown with Clarence in the Semi Final, will the Magpies rise for the challenge here and manage to upset the Roos too? Or is this as far as the Magpie dream goes?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
The loser of this final will be playing the winner of Sunday's game, in what I have tried to understand of the new TSL Finals which is going to last 5 weeks, the winner will go on to play the stand out premiership favourites and if they win that they will be in the Grand Final on September 18th. However we are going to stick with this one for now, Launceston despite their loss last weekend may come out as favourites for this game. Launceston's run of wins game to a horrible end where they failed to look anything like a Premiership Contender until the start of the Third Quarter.
In a twist this season if Launceston loses this game, they do not go out they are still alive, and they could very well be the first and only team in any football league to go out in 3 sets. In most leagues, and in previous seasons a team only had the chance of going out in straight sets, well this season AFL Tasmania has made the finals a Five Week affair and by the end of the finals Launceston could be looking at a 3peat of loses.
But this time around the Blues are going to win, they have to win either this or the next game they play, so there is not going to be any 3peat of loses for the Blues, and they will book themselves a semi final against the Roos, but why are they going to win? They have been the second best side this season, and they have been tough to beat, they are playing at Aurora Stadium as well, that was where the Blues managed to beat the Magpies.
Brian Finch will be certainly back on his toes this weekend, the Magpies are going to find it tough to contain the Hudson Medallist, there is also Michael Sinclair who brought the Blues back to life in the Third Quarter with his goals, and that long goal from just outside the arch.
