SUMMARY
The finals roll on here this week with the Demons heading to Devonport to face a Magpie side that were beaten by 1 point more then their Southern Magpie rivals were beaten by. Launceston started with a blaze, kicking six of the first seven goals, before it was Devonport’s turn to dominate play. The second quarter was dominated by Devonport, they would have been within a kick at the main break had it not been for Brian Finch who kicked a late goal that saw the Blues hold a 10 point lead.
Devonport had a golden opportunity to push for the lead in the third term, only for them to manage to undo all that good work with five straight behinds mirroring the kicking for goal of Collingwood at the MCG that same day.
Those misses seemed to suck all the belief from Devonport, and Launceston started to steal the game from the Magpies, Brian Finch was superb in front of goal with six goals, the Hudson Medalist finding his kicking boots again.
Finch managed to dominate his opponent Al Clements until he was forced from the ground in the last quarter with a hamstring strain. The Blues had an arm-wrestle in the third qualifying final against Devonport at Aurora Stadium for close to three quarters, before putting Devonport to the sword and surging to a 59-point win.
For the vanquished, Rhys Colbeck was a handful all day at full-forward and kicked four goals, and Chris McDonald battled hard all day. They will host North Hobart after the Demons put an undermanned Glenorchy to the sword, the Magpies were already missing a lot of players before the game, but gameday the task was made harder.
Glenorchy would lose David O'Garey (hamstring), Simon Spencer (knee), Mark Corbett (hamstring) to injury while Jake Cox was dropped because of disciplinary reasons, while David Hunt and Jonathon Bowring played under injury. North Hobart won every quarter on way to a 58-point win, with captain Ken Hall, playing-coach Clinton Brown, forward Paul Allison and ruckman Matthew Muir all booted three goals for the Demons.
Stand-in captain Jaye Bowden was by far the Magpies best and also booted a game high four goals. This is the first time since 2008 that North Hobart had beaten Glenorchy and this game relived a lot of nightmares that the young Magpies had back in the days of Kim Excell in the 1990s.
North Hobart has had the wood over the Magpies in the last two seasons, both teams have gone further in the finals then they did last season, now it comes down to a cut throat final, the Southern sides haven't had the season they would have liked Glenorchy bowing out, and the other southern sides not making the finals. Now the Southern hopes are on the shoulders of the Demons. Should the Demons lose, Sam Darley who is Greater West Sydney bound will end his TSL career.
The Magpies have suffered a number of injuries, who will survive the pressure of the knock out final?
PLAYER TO WATCH
Rhys Colbeck (Devonport) – Booted four goals for the Magpies last weekend in their loss to the Blues, goals win matches and he's going to need to kick a few.
Paul Allison (North Hobart) – He's had a great season for the Demons, after his team Kermandie failed to again enter the SFL, smother dominant performance up forward could give the Demons the edge!
QUESTION MARKS
Injuries are a killer, Devonport have injury clouds, injuries, and not many capable replacements, how would morale be at the Magpies after the smashing they got from Launceston?
North Hobart managed to beat an injury plagued Glenorchy, and they have had the better of the Magpies in the past, but would this cross over to their finals campaign?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Both sides have a good case on why they should win, Devonport have home ground advantage, but they also have a lot of problems with injuries, and that smashing last week came at a bad time. North Hobart, have beaten Devonport at their home ground before, and managed to smash an injury plagued Glenorchy side.
Both sides have in the past blown golden opportunities and both have suffered loses to teams to send them out of the finals in the past. This time though the winning team will battle either Clarence or North Launceston next week, and that alone could be a scary prospect for any side. But we are not looking any further then this game here, the injuries Devonport have suffered could work against them, and North Hobart are traveling a bit better then the Magpies, have won their last 2 games after Glenorchy showed them up in the final Round of the TSL season.
Devonport's kicking as well has become a concern, it's the same concern that the Magpies of the AFL is also suffering heading in, though Devonport have not had it for a long time, just in their last final which saw them crushed by a Launceston side that was red hot against them.
So it's going to be the end of the road for the Magpies as far as I am concerned, the lack of fitness of players, and injuries to others have me seeing the Demons as a team that is going to get over the line. The travel won't be a concern for the Demons it hasn't been in the past, won't again. The younger Demons are on a high after not only coming from behind against North Launceston, but over running Glenorchy who had the wood over them.
